What does it really cost to live in Dubai sharing a room?

Rent is the headline, not the total. A realistic monthly budget for someone sharing in Dubai, from the bed to the bus fare.

If you are sharing a room in Dubai, rent is between a third and a half of what you actually spend. Here is a realistic monthly picture for one person, built from the rents on this site plus the costs that always follow them.

The bed

  • Bed space: around AED 750 typically, from about AED 550.
  • Partition: around AED 1,400.
  • Private room: around AED 2,850.

Usually with DEWA and internet included — confirm that, because it moves the total by AED 150 to AED 400.

Getting to work

  • Metro, daily commuter: roughly AED 250 to AED 350 a month on a Nol card.
  • Bus only: less, but slower — and the trade is real. A bed AED 100 cheaper that adds an hour each way is not cheaper.
  • Taxi habit: this is where budgets quietly die. Two taxis a week is another AED 300.

Eating

  • Cooking most nights, sharing a kitchen: AED 600 to AED 900.
  • Canteen or cheap restaurants daily: AED 1,000 to AED 1,500.
  • Kitchen access is not universal in shared listings — roughly a third of live units include it. If you plan to cook, make it a filter, not a hope.

The rest

  • Phone: AED 50 to AED 150.
  • Laundry: AED 50 to AED 150 depending on whether the building has a machine.
  • Sending money home: the transfer fee, plus whatever you send.

Three example months

Saving hard. Bed space AED 750, Metro AED 300, cooking AED 700, phone AED 60, laundry AED 60 → about AED 1,870.

Comfortable sharing. Partition AED 1,400, Metro AED 300, mixed cooking and eating out AED 1,000, phone AED 120, laundry AED 100 → about AED 2,920.

Private room. Room AED 2,850, transport AED 400, food AED 1,200, phone AED 150, laundry AED 150 → about AED 4,750.

The two costs people forget

  1. The first month costs double. Deposit plus first month's rent, together, on day one.
  2. Summer. If bills are not included, August is not like February.

Where the biggest saving actually is

Not in food, and not in the phone. It is in the two decisions you make once: which rung you rent, and which area. Moving from a partition to a bed space saves around AED 650 a month. Moving from Dubai Marina to Deira saves more than that again. See the cheapest areas.
