The cheapest room in Dubai is rarely the cheapest month, because the difference goes on getting to work. The sensible way round is to pick the station first: find the line your job is on, then the stations along it with sharing supply, then the room. The Red Line, north to south
Deira City Centre and Al Rigga (Red/Green interchange at Union) The old city's sharing heartland. Off the metro
Some of the best-value rooms are not on either line: Jumeirah Village Circle for a private room in a new building at about AED 2,500 if you have a car (JVC guide), and International City for the lowest rents in the city, from AED 500, at the cost of a bus ride (International City guide).
The rule of thumb
Within one line, moving one or two stations away from your job typically saves AED 200 to 400 a month on a bed space and AED 300 to 600 on a partition, while changing lines or leaving the network can cost that back in fares and time. The true monthly cost puts transport in the same table as the rent; choose your area by commute makes the case in full.
Which stations have the most shared rooms near them?
On today's listings the densest catchments are BurJuman, where the Red and Green lines meet under the mall, Union on the Deira side, Mall of the Emirates for the Al Barsha blocks, and Dubai Internet City for Barsha Heights.
Does living near a metro station cost more?
Yes, and visibly so. The same partition gains a few hundred dirhams a month for being a walk from a station rather than a bus ride. Whether that is worth paying depends on whether you would actually use the train daily; if you work nights or your office has no station near it, you are buying something you will not use.
How do I check how far the room really is from the station?
Ask for the building name, not the district, and look at the walk yourself. "Five minutes to the metro" in an advert is measured by somebody who was not carrying shopping in July. Then go and see the room before you pay anything at all.
